Lisa Parry has woven a story here of promisingly epic proportions. This is the virtuoso first part of her Black Sorcery Trilogy, in which a powerful book of spells disguised as a blank diary is found by her unsuspecting, young-adult protagonist Melissa in a manner that reminded me of Bilbo ‘finding’ Gollum’s ring - it isn’t just wands that choose the wizard or the witch! No sooner has she acquired it than she is propelled into a running battle with the forces of evil, during which she discovers she is actually a witch - one of the most powerful of her generation.
Beautifully written, this is an action-packed story will have you on the edge of your seat most of the time, and – if you’re like me - leave you impatient for more. As a first novel it is a tour de force, and I look forward to part 2 in this highly entertaining account of the struggle between good and evil in a world where magic has the power both to entrance and to devastate.
