Mark of Four Guardian of the Vale Volume 1 Tamara Shoemaker Books
Shoemaker has done it again. Looking for a great fantasy read? Mark of Four gives us Alayne, a young woman who can wield all four elements in a world where most can wield only one. The why to that forms the crux of the book, and provides a whole lot of action and plot to keep you turning the pages.Shoemaker also gives us love interests gone awry, female friendships, the nemesis who may not be quite all he seems, on top of extremely creative thinking with her depiction of the elements and how one might "bend" them. I could totally see this book as a movie - the special effects would be brilliant!
If you are a fan of Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Last Airbender, heck, even Narnia - any sort of young adult fantasy - I think you'll love this book!
P.S. Ms. Shoemaker, may I please learn the secret to wielding water now? It sounds like fun!

Mark of Four Guardian of the Vale Volume 1 Tamara Shoemaker Books Reviews
"Mark of Four" is an exciting, futuristic YA yarn that struck me as familiar and unique in all the best ways. Shoemaker incorporates a heroine who faces struggles any girl can relate with into a captivating fantasy world. Not to mention a mysterious plot that kept me guessing to the end, and an ending that left me itching to find out what's coming next.
Lovers of the genre need look no further for the perfect summer read. "Mark of Four" has all the elements* we crave.
*Pun retroactively intended.
P.S. I don't know if it's a thing, but if it is, I'm 200% on Team Daymon.
Mark of Four is an exciting story about a couple of teenage elementals. Some people can wield one of the four elements; air, water, earth, and fire. If they can’t, they are “naturals”. The feel of Harry Potter is here in this aspect of naturals versus elementals as well as with the boarding school where the elementals attend. Elementals all work together with their own elements to make the school function.
Alayne navigates school life with a fun, talkative new friend, Marysa, and a few boyfriends that she has to choose between. There is also the ever present, mysterious Daymon who often shows up out of nowhere and seems to be protecting Alayne although their relationship isn’t great. I find myself hoping that I’m going to read more about this guarded guy in the future!
I was not able to put this story down for long between readings! The beginning moves quickly and before you know it, everyone has started school. The school life brings about plenty of drama all while everyone is learning to use their new elemental power. All except for Alayne, who has known how to wield her element well for a long time, much to her parent’s dismay. Then, a battle breaks out and it’s clear that someone isn’t who they claim to be.
I liked the pace, not too fast nor does it drag on leaving you wanting to just get to the point. This story has a love triangle (and a love interest that I’d like to see come together in future books), a few mysteries and surprises, and good friendships. It’s also fun to read how the elementals wield their elements from just playing around, to making all things function, and finally to battling it out.
Mark of Four has been laying in my pile to read for some time. When I finally picked it up the other day, I got hooked and couldn't stop! The one positive to waiting so long is that I don't have to wait for the rest of the series!
A fun read that will take you into a thrilling world of mystery and magic. Readers of Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Last Air Bender will love this book.
Ms. Shoemaker’s epic coming-of-age fantasy tale entertains readers with fun magical elements and the trials of unlikely heroes who overcome difficult obstacles (hints of Harry Potter and The Hunger Games). The prose is lyrical and a joy to read. I couldn't put it down! I was a little grumpy about the cliffhanger ending, but that means a second book is promised. ) I can’t wait! Young adult readers will enjoy this book.
This book effortlessly blends together the best parts of fantasy, YA, and dystopian fiction. Alayne is the perfect character to introduce you to a complex, yet somehow familiar, world of elementals and futuristic technology. This book will keep you guessing from the start and is filled with complex characters who you will love getting to know. My personal favorite is the steady and loyal Jayme! If, like me, you are a big fan of Avatar the Last Airbender, Harry Potter, and the Hunger Games then you will LOVE this book. It brings in elements from all of those kinds of stories, while also bringing its own unique voice and world to the table. Definitely a book that I plan to read again and again until the sequel comes out!!
Naturals and Elementals coexist peacefully...for now. One faction, led by shadow casters, want to change that. Once they find a source of power known as the Vale, they will be unstoppable.
I was a fun, fast read with an interesting world. I left the story feeling satisfied, but there are still lots of things to be explored deeper in the second book. Overall, It was probably 4 1/2 stars
I dinged it half a star because of nit-picky details/elements of the story that were fine, but could have been better.
